The premiere of the Buddhist classic Avatamsaka Sutra - Seeing the Lotus at Aranya’s Place  The audience responded enthusiastically and deeply moved

At 19:30 on Friday, December 6, 2024, the Zhongzheng Hall of Taipei Zhongshan Hall was packed with more than 800 audience members gathered together to witness another masterpiece of Fo Guang University's Buddhist Classics Series of Oratorios - "The Avatamsaka Sutra - The premiere of "Seeing the Lotus in Aranya's Place". This work, with its profound Buddhist wisdom and exquisite musical expression, brings the audience a double feast of hearing and soul.
After Fo Guang University launched the oratorio "Avatamsaka Sutra - The Path to Buddhahood of Sudhana" in 2023, the oratorio creation of Fo Guang University has continued to reach new heights. This year's work "Seeing the Lotus in the Aranya" takes a fresh and profound theme as the background, telling the story of the wisdom lotus blooming in the quiet forest, symbolizing that the sound of enlightenment spreads throughout the universe, presenting a solemn Huazang world. The performance of this oratorio, both in terms of music arrangement and stage presentation, carefully depicts the vastness and depth of the Buddha's realm.
The performance was jointly performed by the Taipei Sixteen Chorus and the Yilan Philharmonic Orchestra, and featured wonderful performances by four solo vocalists: Lin Wenjun, Li Rongying, Zhang Kunyuan, and Yang Shengan. The music of the oratorio was composed by composer Liu Jingjiang, who skillfully integrated Buddhist chants, mantras and classical instruments into the orchestra and chorus, interpreting Buddhist stories in the form of music, allowing the profound Buddhist thoughts to be conveyed through art, which moved the audience. Every listener.
The audience response was also very enthusiastic. Audiences from different backgrounds said that this was their first time to appreciate an oratorio and they were amazed. One audience member shared: "Today I came to listen to the Buddhist classic "Avatamsaka Cantata". In the past, I have listened to opera, modern dance or ballet. I was curious about how to present Buddhist classics in the form of opera. I didn't expect that this performance not only made me She remained energetic throughout the performance and was even moved to tears during some scenes. She also mentioned that she had heard people say "she is blessed" but this performance made her feel strongly for the first time that she is What a blessing it is to have the opportunity to listen to such a wonderful oratorio in person, and I am grateful for this rare experience.
Another audience member said that after watching the performance, he had a deeper understanding of Buddhist teachings and wisdom, especially the lyrics about "let go of all thoughts, remove all obstacles, and eliminate all confusion", which made him Feeling the supreme wisdom and compassion of Buddhism, he deeply realized how Buddhist thought can liberate and transform people's hearts. The whole performance was not only an audio-visual enjoyment, but also a spiritual cleansing, allowing every audience member to gain inner peace and enlightenment.
Xie Yuanfu, Dean of the College of Creativity and Technology at Fo Guang University, also pointed out at the event that this is the fourth cantata launched by Fo Guang University. The university has always been committed to creatively interpreting Buddhist classics in the spirit of Master Hsing Yun's Humanistic Buddhism.
